Two underachieving teams faced-off in the Meadowlands on Sunday with Cincinnati leaving with a 38-31 victory. Questions about benching Chad Pennington should be silenced after he threw for 272 yards and three touchdowns, but his lone mistake was a crucial interception with under one minute to go in the game, sealing the win for Cincinnati. The Jets were able to move the ball very well offensively through the air against a porous Bengals defense. Although Thomas Jones and the running game was not effective, Laveranues Coles torched Cincinnati for 8-133-2 touchdowns. Cincinnati had a balanced game plan, utilizing back up running back Kenny Watson for 130 yards and three touchdowns, allowing the Bengals to stay unpredictable and more lethal than the pass happy offense they have been thus far this season. |

When the final whistle blew in New England on Sunday the Patriots went to 5-0 and the Cleveland Browns dropped to 2-3. The major match up in this game was Bill Belichik vs. Derek Anderson. Belichik’s schemes forced Derek Anderson into three interceptions. Anderson did throw for two touchdowns and 287 yards, but was extremely ineffective for the first three quarters. Cleveland's secondary came to play today against Randy Moss, it's just they forgot about Ben Watson who torched them for 6 catches for 107 yards and 2 touchdowns. Although the Browns didn't record a sack, they did get adequate pressure on Brady forcing him into some inaccurate passes, and a season low 57% comptetion percentage. |

The Bears went into Detroit with a new QB under center and left with another loss. Detroit was unable to finish drives in the first half and came into halftime trailing 7-3, but turned it around by scoring 34 points in the fourth quarter and finished off with a 37-27 win. The Bears were banged up in this one, missing three of their four starting defensive backs, along with Pro Bowl LB Lance Briggs. Kitna was unable to take advantage of that through three quarters with WR Roy Williams, but the tired defense and persistent offense was able to capitalize with two passing touchdowns from Kitna and a rushing touchdown by Kevin Jones in the fourth quarter. The Detroit Lions were able to dominate the Bears offensive line at the point of attack. Shaun Rogers controlled the line with four tackles and two sacks and the rest of the Detroit front seven, including Jared DeVries (three sacks) shut down the Bears running game, forcing Griese to throw 52 times during this game.

A statement was made, actually a few statements were made. Dallas completely dominated the Chicago Bears for a 34-10 win in a week three battle for NFC supremacy. In the NASFA spotlight preview we pointed out four keys to the game, all of which turned for the worst for the Bears. If the Bears were to win the game they needed to get pressure on Tony Romo, to an extent that didn’t happen. Romo was very elusive in the pocket, but overall the Cowboys offensive line, led by Leonard Davis, was able to shut down Tommy Harris and the defensive line of the Bears. Because of the good offensive line play by Dallas, they were able to run for 5.2 yards per carry, and open up the offense to playmakers Terrell Owens and Jason Witten. Chicago did get some pressure on Romo at times, but he was able to escape and find Owens for numerous third down conversions. |

The Indianapolis Colts held on just long enough to outlast Tennessee in another close battle, 22 – 20. The Colts offense could move the ball, mainly through the air, all day against the Titan defense, but could not seal the deal with touchdowns. Kicker Adam Vinatieri scored the final nine points for the Colts on kicks of 22, 39, and 20 yards. Even Vinatieri looked to be in rare form having an extra point blocked and missing a 36-yard field goal. As for Tennessee, Vince Young managed a good game through the air, throwing for 184 yards and a touchdown. The ground game tallied up a total of 141 yards, but was mostly held in check by the Colts D. Indianapolis prevented the “big plays” and made some plays of their own, forcing two turnovers. |
