A common dogma in the NFL is that games are won or lost in the trenches. A key for defenses is to get consistent pressure with their down linemen. Doing this allows for more players to be in coverage, and thus making the passing game more difficult for the offense. There have been 12 defensive linemen taken no. 1 overall. Last year the importance of the defensive end was put on display against what some called the best running back in 20 years to come out of college, as Reggie Bush took a backseat to Mario Williams. The level of importance at this position is obviously very high in the minds of NFL teams.

We’ve already looked at drafts 2000-2003, now I’ll be diving into 2004-2006. Some of these may be a bit tougher to judge because some, especially from last year, may develop into great players but have not yet, but we’ll go with it anyway. Like I stated before, my goal here is to get you to take a deeper look into this April’s draft, and encourage you to really look into a later round draft pick before dismissing him as a nobody. |

Most great teams have great Quarterbacks. It's become very rare for a team to win the Super Bowl without a great QB unless they had an outstanding defense. When thinking of first round QB’s one can think of Peyton Manning, Donovan McNabb, and Carson Palmer; OR one can be thinking of Tim Couch, Ryan Leaf, and Akili Smith. Of course you'll find gems in the later rounds such as Tom Brady and Marc Bulger, but your best bet to grab a top QB comes in Round 1. Here's a look at some potential top picks: |
