NFL Spotlight Review: Eagles vs. Redskins
Written by Andrew Segal

The Week two Monday Night Match-up proved to be entertaining on numerous levels.  It renewed a rivalry that has been dominated by Philadelphia over the past few years.  It displayed the grit and tenacity of a young Quarterback in Jason Campbell and rookie safety LaRon Landry.  It also put on display the reason why after the 2003 season the Eagles went on to sign then Free Agent Terrell Owens, as the Eagles receivers came under just as much scrutiny by the MNF announcers and general sports media as Quarterback Donovan McNabb.

It was a close game until the very last offensive play by Philadelphia.  A drop by Kevin Curtis killed any chance that the Eagles had at trying to get the game to overtime.

The Redskins offense provided enough big plays against the Eagles defense to force the Eagles into a game plan that lead to disaster last season.  In 2006, the Eagles, under McNabb were tops in offensive production on McNabb’s broad shoulders and yet, as a team carried a 5-5 record as a starter for the season.  The Eagles reverted to pass first, second, and third even though Brian Westbrook was eating up yardage on the ground.

WWRD? What Would Rocky Do?

The Philadelphia Eagles are two weeks into what was to be a promising, easy beginning to the 2007 season.  After surprising many fans at mini-camps, Donovan McNabb made a stunning return to the Eagles after a season-ending knee injury in 2006.  After making it through all of training camp, the Eagles looked poised to have an easy start to the season with games against the Packers, Redskins and the Lions.

The Eagles have scored just one touchdown going into their week three contest against the 2-0 Detroit Lions.  They are looking for answers on the offensive side of the ball after Monday’s disappointing loss with Donovan McNabb’s health status being the main area of conjecture.

After watching closely both of the games live, plus several replays of both the Packers and Redskins games, McNabb has looked shaky at times, but more than competent as well.  In the Redskins game he completed more than 60% of his passes and the drops by receivers continue to plague McNabb’s incompletion statistics.  He has moved around the pocket pretty well and the sacks he has taken has been due more to poor blocking than a sluggish knee.  So, with McNabb even stating that he is not rusty let me ask you this.  How can a team from Philadelphia not have the “EYE OF THE TIGER?”

Game Spotlight Preview: St. Louis Rams vs. San Francisco 49ers

This battle features two of the best backs in the league on two teams flying under the radar in the NFC West.

The Rams come off a loss to the Panthers in Week One. Steven Jackson never got involved in the game, and Marc Bulger looked average at best against a suspect Carolina secondary. They will look to get the ball to Jackson early and often against San Francisco

The 49ers, meanwhile, come off a thrilling victory over the Cardinals. Frank Gore, like Jackson, was not very involved in his first game back, but the defense picked up the slack with a stellar performance against a potent Arizona offense.

Neither team revealed much in week one, so this will be a key game that will determine a lot in the crowded NFC West. Look for Alex Smith to try to get back on track vs. a suspect Rams secondary. Gore also will look to step it up against a middle-of-the-line defense.
